The Fosston, Minnesota community is grieving the loss of 31-year-old TeeJay Alvarez, who died Tuesday after suffering a gunshot wound in an incident that remains under investigation. His death has left family, friends, and community members heartbroken as they come to terms with the loss.
According to law enforcement officials, officers responded to an apartment complex in the 300 block of Mark Avenue on Monday afternoon after receiving a report of a disturbance involving a possible firearm. Upon arrival, they found that Alvarez had been shot inside an apartment.
Alvarez was initially transported to Essentia Health–Fosston Hospital and was later airlifted to Essentia Health in Fargo for specialized medical treatment. Despite the efforts of healthcare professionals, he succumbed to his injuries the following day. The Cass County Coroner’s Office confirmed that his cause of death was a gunshot wound.
During the investigation, authorities took 22-year-old Cory Burnette Jr. into custody without incident. He is being held at the Northwest Regional Correctional Center on probable cause allegations that include second-degree assault and discharge of a firearm. Formal charges are pending as investigators continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
Several agencies, including the Fosston Police Department, the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, and the Minnesota State Patrol, are assisting with the ongoing investigation.
