MPUMALANGA, South Africa — Family, friends, and community members across Mpumalanga are mourning the tragic deaths of Godfrey Khoza and Vigo Khoza, who lost their lives after a vehicle plunged into the Crocodile River near Mbombela (Nelspruit) on Sunday, June 7, 2026.
According to police reports, witnesses alerted authorities during the early morning hours after observing a Haval SUV overshoot an intersection, crash through a fence, and enter the crocodile-infested river.
Emergency search-and-rescue teams responded immediately to the scene and located the submerged vehicle. Police divers entered the water and confirmed that two occupants were trapped inside. Using specialized recovery equipment, rescue crews successfully retrieved the SUV from the river, where the victims were later identified as Godfrey Khoza and Vigo Khoza.
Despite the efforts of emergency personnel, both individuals were pronounced deceased.
The tragedy has left family members, friends, and loved ones devastated as they struggle to come to terms with the sudden loss. Police confirmed that a cellphone believed to belong to Chiloane was discovered inside the recovered vehicle. Rescue teams continue to search the surrounding area as family members await answers.
